Are You Eating Too Many Carbs? Watch Out for These Telltale Signs

There are many low carb diets here and there, and we can't blame these low carb eating plans, for here are numerous negative effects of consuming too much refined carbohydrates.

1. Your Body Bloats

Carb-rich food contains higher amount of dietary fibers, mostly has gluten, and is made with milk, which is bad for those with lactose intolerance.

2. Your Belly Swells

Well, not all carbs are created equal. Empty carbs like white bread, pasta, chips, and starchy snacks promotes accumulation of Visceral fats which makes the belly big and is hazardous to our health.

3. You Crave Sugary Foods

Crazy, sugar cravings are caused by the empty carbs we consume. The refined or processed carbohydrates we eat stimulates the part of our brain responsible for hunger, appetite, and cravings.

4. You're Hungry All the Time

Avoiding carbohydrates will lower insulin which triggers cravings and hunger pains.  This will also shush the part of the brain that influences our satiety and hunger.

5. You Struggle with Acne

Break outs are worsened by consuming too much refined carbs, according to The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.  Although they are not the main cause, but it makes perfect sense when we think that starch quickly turns to sugar, which feeds bacteria.

6. You Get More Cavities

Sugar eats away our tooth enamel. So the more starch and sugar we consume, the more we may suffer tooth decay or tooth loss.

7. Fatigue Sets In

Feeling restless all the time?  MayoClinic.com states that "If you eat too many carbs but too little dietary protein and healthy fats, or if you choose unhealthy carbs – such as added sugars, refined grains, sweets and sugary drinks – instead of nutrient-dense carbs you run the risk for nutrient deficiencies, which can drain your energy."

8. You May Be At Higher Risk Of Depression

Down, crabby, mood swings-  or worse, depression- a high carb diet may not only cause physical health problems, but may affect mental health, too. Refined carbs are low in brain-healthy nutrients, and does not promote the production of Serotonin, an important neurotransmitter.

9. You Have A Foggy Brain

Can't think clearly? Make sure you eat the right kind of carbohydrates- whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and legumes provide a high-quality fuel for brain function. Avoid sweetened, refined, and processed foods that negatively impacts brain function.

10. You Can't Bulk Up

Lifting weights but not gaining? Don't cut the carbs, just stay away from the bad ones. Eating too much of the refined kind could be stored as body fat. Carbs should be used as a fuel, so make sure you eat just the right amount from quality sources.

11. Your Health Declines

Weak and sickly all the time? Take a closer look on your diet. High carb diets affect blood sugar levels, brain functions, digestive processes, and are energy-dense. Hey, they wouldn't be called "empty carbs" for nothing if they are high in nutrients and health benefits, right?
